Mother’s Day is fast approaching (May 13!). What better way to appreciate your own mother than to be reminded of the ones you’re glad you don’t have?
Queen Cersei (Game of Thrones) – The unapologetically blunt Cersei Lannister will stop at nothing to protect her family’s throne, even letting her insufferable son, King Joffrey, get away with power-hungry tantrums that often end in fatality.
Petunia Dursley (Harry Potter) – As Harry’s adoptive mother, the neglectful Petunia failed miserably in her role by beefing up her son Dudley’s ego and stomping all over Harry’s.
Mrs. Wormwood (Matilda) – Along with her husband, Mrs. Wormwood cares very little for her precocious daughter, preferring to go along with her husband’s schemes rather than take interest in Matilda’s talents and cleverness.
Queen Gertrude (Hamlet) – For marrying her late husband’s brother and encouraging forbidden Oedipal-like feelings in her son, Gertrude deserves a plaque for all of the family dysfunction she provoked.
Other Mother (Coraline) – As Coraline realizes that the seemingly perfect Other Mother in the parallel universe she frequents is actually an unhappy, soul-stealing monster, the audience can only hope that Coraline gets out alive – and without buttons for eyes!
