Lies Beneath by Anne Greenwood Brown is spectacularly creepy, and how can it not be when it features a family of ruthless mermaids living in the cold depths of Lake Superior? Calder White and his sisters exist by hunting humans and retaining their positive energy (like I said, this isn’t a bedtime story). To avenge their mother’s death, the sisters cook up a scheme to kill her assumed murderer, a man named Jason Hancock, by involving his daughter, Lily. As the only boy in the family–and a conveniently very good-looking and charismatic one at that–Calder poses as a human on land to get close to Lily.
Although merpeople are the stuff of legend, Brown managed to make this eerie, dark myth into an almost believable one. But these merpeople are not from the vivid and joyous world we’ve come to love in The Little Mermaid. Calder is no Prince Charming, and his sisters are as evil as it gets. Lies Beneath has all the trappings of a great beach read.
Or, on second thought, maybe you should devour this one on the subway.

Penelope (Lo) Marin has always loved to collect beautiful things. Between ABC’s Once Upon a Time (BTW we are hooked, as well as super creeped out by Robert Carlyle as Rumpelstiltskin), and the TWO upcoming Snow White adaptations (Snow White and the Huntsman featuring Kristen Stewart & Charlize Theron, and Mirror Mirror featuring Julia Roberts & Lily Collins), fairytale retellings are clearly all the rage lately, and we couldn’t be happier! What’s great about adaptations is seeing just how different they all are, and how they each stand out.
Marissa Meyer’s debut novel, Cinder, the first in a planned quartet, is certainly not everyone’s glass slipper. A futuristic Cinderella tale, the book features cyborgs, androids, a massive plague, and intergalactic warfare… not to mention, ya know, the whole falling-in-love-with-a-handsome-prince thing. You could say the novel itself is like a cyborg: put together with a wide range of spare parts, yet with a real, beating human heart. It may sound like she’s trying too hard, but miraculously, Meyer pulls it off—the novel buzzes and spins and comes to life. We’re immediately drawn into a future world that feels both convincing and fantastical at the same time, and most importantly, we’re rooting for cyborg-Cindy from the start, fake foot and all, and drooling over hottie Prince Kai!

A strange and compulsively readable psychological thriller, Anne Heltzel’s Circle Nine loosely follows the nine levels of Dante’s Inferno as it tracks the story of Abby, a girl who has suffered a trauma so bad she has forgotten, well, everything. The tale opens as Abby is carried off by her “rescuer,” a boy named Sam. Because of her amnesia, she cannot remember any details of her life before Sam saved her. Together, she and Sam begin to build a magical, protected life in the woods, away from the dangers of the place she came from—a place she and Sam call Circle Nine.
Through a spiraling narrative of fantasy, memory, and doubt, Abby must force the truth out—even if it kills their dream world. Even if it kills her.
There are hints of Fight Club and even One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest in Heltzel’s parable about learned helplessness—how we can be lead to believe whatever we want to believe, if it’s easier than facing reality. How we can turn captors into saviors, and come to rely most on those who hurt us most. How our own fears can turn in circles, trapping us—and, like spider’s webs, the more we struggle against them the more we are ensnared.
