Between ABC’s Once Upon a Time (BTW we are hooked, as well as super creeped out by Robert Carlyle as Rumpelstiltskin), and the TWO upcoming Snow White adaptations (Snow White and the Huntsman featuring Kristen Stewart & Charlize Theron, and Mirror Mirror featuring Julia Roberts & Lily Collins), fairytale retellings are clearly all the rage lately, and we couldn’t be happier! What’s great about adaptations is seeing just how different they all are, and how they each stand out.
Marissa Meyer’s debut novel, Cinder, the first in a planned quartet, is certainly not everyone’s glass slipper. A futuristic Cinderella tale, the book features cyborgs, androids, a massive plague, and intergalactic warfare… not to mention, ya know, the whole falling-in-love-with-a-handsome-prince thing. You could say the novel itself is like a cyborg: put together with a wide range of spare parts, yet with a real, beating human heart. It may sound like she’s trying too hard, but miraculously, Meyer pulls it off—the novel buzzes and spins and comes to life. We’re immediately drawn into a future world that feels both convincing and fantastical at the same time, and most importantly, we’re rooting for cyborg-Cindy from the start, fake foot and all, and drooling over hottie Prince Kai!
